National Museum of Tatarstan, Kazan R.F.
Inventory Number: Kazan 1
Provenance: Bab el-Gasus (Theban Necropolis)
This is one of a pair of coffins belonging to Nesjtaudjatakhet presented by the Khedive of Egypt to Tsar
Alexander III in 1893 as part of the famous "Lot 6" of the artifacts discovered in Bab el-Gasus in 1891. The
outer coffin is now in the Odessa Archaeological Museum, Odessa, Ukraine.
Due to neglect and improper storage during the Soviet Period, the coffin is in very bad condition. Theban
coffins of this period are unique their highly refined, painted decoration. We hope that by publishing this
one on the web will attract attention to the plight of Egyptian antiquities in the museums of the former
Soviet Union and inspire sponsoring for conservation and restoration.

The photos shown here were made under almost impossible
conditions due to the manner in which the coffin was stored at the
time our CESRAS team (Galina A. Belova, Alexej A. Krol, Edward R.
Loring) studied the museum's collection in 1998. Because of its
inaccessibility, it was only possible to photograph one side and the
lid of the coffin. The photographs had to be made from differing
angles under difficult and differing lighting conditions. They have
been edited as exactly as possible to make the mosaics seen
below. We ask for your understanding.
